  • Why do you need my Employers Tax Reference Number (ERN)?
  • All insurers are now required to supply the ERN to the Employers' Liability Tracing Office. The Employers Liability Tracing Office (ELTO) is an independent industry body comprising members who are EL insurers. In April 2011, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) will require all Employers Liability (EL) insurers to publish all current EL policies on a website in a searchable format. EL insurers can satisfy this obligation by becoming a member of ELTO and supplying data to the EL Database (ELD). The ELD will be accessible for claimant searches from this data via www.elto.org.uk and will be used to trace EL policies.
    As your brokers, it is our responsibility to capture the necessary information, so insurers will have all relevant information for onward transmission to ELTO.
  • I have just started my own company. What are the minimum insurance I need before I start work?
  • In the UK there are two classes of compulsory insurance, Employers Liability and Third party Motor Insurance. You will therefore need to consider Combined Liability insurance in addition to any motor insurance for your cars, vans, lorries and Plant as a minimum. Generally it will be uneconomic for you to obtain insurance on a contract by contract basis. Most contractors take out annual insurance based on estimates for the year allowing for the highs and lows spreading premium payment throughout the year by monthly direct debit.
  • So what is a Combined Liability policy?
  • Combined Liability Insurance normally comprises of Employers Liability insurance and Public Liability insurance.
  • What is Employers Liability Insurance?
  • Employers Liability insurance in the UK is a statutory requirement of all Employers and protects your legal liability arising from injury to employees including direct employees, the self-employed, labour only subcontractors, hired in plant operatives, agency and casual labour.
  • What is Public Liability Insurance?
  • Public Liability insurance protects your legal liability arising from injury to third party persons, ie people who are not your employees, and damage to their property.
